Inspired by Jen Aitken's exhibition, The Same Thing Looks Different as well as sculptural works by Ella Gonzales presented as part of the in parallel group show. Family members will work together to create 3-D sculptures, reshaping and stacking recycled cardboard boxes inspired by how Ella Gonzales and Jen Aitken explore space in their artworks.

ABOUT THE SAME THING LOOKS DIFFERENT:

Jen Aitken is a Toronto-based artist whose first major institutional presentation features both new commissions and a selection of existing concrete sculptures. Primarily working in sculpture, Aitken’s practice considers how we relate to space, form, and material as we move through our urban environment. Common building materials—concrete, wood, and fibreglass—are formed into unexpected and ambiguous configurations that engage with the viewer's body and interact with the gallery's architecture. Aitken will also debut her first video installation, animating the geometric lexicon of her sculptures into an immersive prelude to the exhibition.

ABOUT IN PARALLEL:

in parallel is a two-part group exhibition that presents the work of twelve local artists, evoking The Power Plant’s very first exhibition, Toronto: A Play of History (Jeu d’histoire), 1987. Both of the 2023 exhibitions will bring together tensions, hopes, and the transformative spaces artists create in the unfolding aftermath of settler colonialism. Specifically, in parallel highlights the intimate connections between land and body, while expressing each artist’s desire for changes that can lead to an intercommunal future.
